Windows Phone gets left behind as Facebook calling on iPhone arrives in UK

Windows Phone really needs to get its finger out or it's going to be left in the dark ages as far as Facebook is concerned.

The Facebook Messenger app on iPhones in the UK is today starting to roll out free voice calls.

Tap the "Free Call" button on Facebook friends' details and you can talk to them for free using a WiFi connection (you may find the button greyed out until the service is fully activated).

This is just the latest in many major improvements made by Facebook to its iOS apps.

And what do we have on Windows Phone?

We have a very basic official Facebook app from Microsoft that creaks at the joints and doesn't let you do a lot of things, let along voice calls.

OK, Facebook is integrated fairly well into the WP People hub, but while that was a major step forward a couple of years ago, it now fails to impress.

And why is it that Microsoft has to develop the official Facebook app for WP? Why doesn't Facebook itself do it, as it does for iOS and Android?

While WP boss Joe Belfiore may be wearing his fingers to stumps tweeting teasers of new WP apps, let's hope his team are working hard on bringing the Windows Phone Facebook experience out of the primordial soup.
