Amazon has announced that publishers of newspapers and magazines on its Kindle platform can now get a bigger share of sales revenue. It's now allowing publishers a 70/30 per cent cut - exactly the same deal that's offered by Apple to sellers in its iTunes store, including publishers of periodicals, books and apps.
Amazon has attached a few rules to the deal: publishers can only get 70% if their product is made available on all Kindle devices and all Kindle apps produced for other devices like the iPad and iPhone.
It seems likely this change has been forced on Amazon by publishers who want to see an industry-wide standard.
And, in a strange way, it could allow Apple to produce a dedicated newspaper and magazine store on iTunes, something it's been planning for months.
The old Amazon contract rules stopped publishers using another platform - like Apple devices - if the deal undercut the Kindle profit share. Now, the deals are going to be exactly the same, letting publishers use both Amazon and Apple for their merchandise.
