Here's a good old Apple mystery tale..with what looks like a happy ending.Apple hates Flash. We all know that. It doesn't allow you to watch Flash video on your iPhone, iPad or iPod. It means if you go to websites like the BBC on your device, you won't be able to watch video content because that uses Adobe's Flash.
Then along comes Skyfire. It produces web browsers and it produced one for the iPhone.
No-one expected Apple would approve it in a million years. But Apple did. And today the Skyfire browser app appeared for sale in the iTunes App Store.
Twitter was a-twit with it. Apple allowing an app that lets you watch Flash....whatever next.
Then, Apple did what Apple do quite a lot.
The Skyfire app disappeared from the App Store only a couple of hours after it appeared.
Do we detect the ultra-heavy hand of Apple coming down to crush poor Skyfire?
Well...no.
It seems Skyfire pulled the app itself, because so many people were downloading it. It meant the company couldn't keep up with bandwidth demand from customers using the app.
Here's what Skyfire has to say about it on the company blog:
Skyfire for iPhone has been received with unbelievable enthusiasm. Despite our best attempts and predictions, the demand far exceeds our initial projections.
The user experience was performing well for the first few hours, but as the surge continued, the peak load on our servers and bandwidth caused the video experience to degrade.
Thus we are effectively ‘sold out’ and will temporarily not accept new purchases from the App Store. We are working really hard to increase capacity and will be accepting new purchases from the App Store as soon as we can support it.
