I've reported before on a very useful app for jailbroken iPhones called "5-Row-Keyboard".
It adds an extra row to the device's inbuilt keyboard which you can configure to show numbers or symbols.
I've been using it for a couple of weeks now and it really does make typing on the iPhone much easier.
And the good thing about the app is the developer keeps updating it to iron out problems and add new features. It's just been updated again:
