If you're a regular reader of this blog, you'll probably have seen the phrase "CES in Las Vegas" sprinkled around. Perhaps it's left you wondering what CES is?
It's the Consumer Electronics Show, an event held each January in Las Vegas. This year it's January 6-9. And it's big. Very big. And this year it will be bigger than ever.
Just about every manufacturer of consumer gadgets and gizmos will have a stand, usually showing off previews of stuff they're planning to try to sell us later in the year. It's not open to the public...just to trade and Press. The whole shebang takes 18 days to set-up in the Las Vegas Convention Centre.

When I say "every manufacturer" showing off future products, there's one notable exception. Apple.
Apple steers clear of product launches at CES and, instead, holds its own, either in San Francisco or at its Cupertino HQ.
But this year's CES will be interesting to Apple fans keen to see what rival manufacturers are planning to combat the dominance of the iPhone, the iPad and the iPod...and, to a certain extent, Mac desktops and laptops.
You can be sure there'll be a raft of smartphones running Google's Android operating system and Microsoft's new Windows Phone 7 OS. And, probably more interesting, will be tablet computers trying to knock the iPad off its top perch, with announcements expected from Dell, HP-Palm, RIM/Blackberry, Motorola, MSI and Samsung. In fact, it's expected more than 1,000 new tablets will be launched this year.
