The average iPad user is male, 48-years-old, well educated, well paid and with a big interest in breaking news.
That's according to a study carried out by the Reynolds Journalism Institute in the US for the Digital Publishing Alliance, a trade body of digital publishers in America.
The Institute questioned 1,600 iPad owners. Eighty-per-cent were men, 55% have a household income of more than $100,000, 76% had a bachelor's degree and 38% had a master's degree.
The primary use of the device for 84% of users was keeping up-to-date with breaking news. This was followed by leisure reading of books, newspapers and magazines (81%), browsing the web (80%) and email (75%)
Interestingly, of those that read newspapers on their iPad, nearly 75% said they preferred to use an app and not the paper's website. And the survey seems to indicated a take-up of iPad news reading directly relates to buying fewer print papers.
