Microsoft Plans "Major Update" In Battle Of The Smartphone Operating Systems

News is leaking out that Microsoft is planning a "very major" update to its new Windows Phone 7 operating system, running on a raft of smartphones from Samsung, LG and the like.

We already know there will be an update, probably in January, to add cut-and-paste. But word has it the "major" update, later in the year, will really change things.

Microsoft is very aware that its rivals are now regularly issuing OS updates that allow the manufacturers to promote real new features and enhancements. Apple iOS5 is being planned and Google has already announced upgrades to its Android OS.

ZDNet is reporting that the Microsoft project has been dubbed "Mango" and will, in effect, take Windows Phone 7 up to 7.5.

It could include better multi-tasking, in-app downloads and a changed user interface design. Windows Phone 7 was launched primarily for consumer leisure use.  But Microsoft knows it is in danger of losing its big business customer base that used the old Windows Mobile platform.  Changes to please business users seem likely.
