Big Brother iPhone Apps "Send Secret Personal Info to Advertisers"

Some scary stuff has been unearthed by The Wall Street Journal about the amount of personal information sent by some iPhone apps to advertisers.

The paper tested 101 apps developed for iPhones and Android phones. It found that 56 transmitted the phone's unique device ID without asking the owner's consent.

Forty-seven apps transmitted the phone's location and - here's the really scary bit - five sent age, gender and other personal information.

It says that among the apps tested, iPhone ones sent more info than Android apps, including the hugely popular Pandora music app.

The info can be used by advertisers to direct specific ads to owners.
