Update: It's confirmed O2 IS unlocking the iPhone 4. See update post.
This is a bit hazy, but I hope it may help people on contract on the O2 UK network and who want to officially unlock their iPhone 4.
Apparently, O2 will start free official unlocks today, December 6, for contract customers. They're already doing it for iPhone 3G and 3GS owners, and it seems the iPhone 4 will now be added.
The proceedure is to fill in this web form, O2 will text you when the unlock has been authorised and you connect to iTunes to complete it.
The info has come from this forum, where at least one person has had an iPhone 4 officially unlocked already.
