Saurik Gives More Info On Mac Cydia Store

More details are emerging of the planned Cydia jailbreak App Store for Macs.

If you've jailbroken your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, you'll know Cydia. It's installed on your jailbroken device and lets you download apps that Apple won't accept.

Cydia works by installing a tweak called MobileSubstrate on your device. That lets apps modify the Apple operating system.

The ars technica website is reporting that the man behind Cydia, Jay Freeman - aka Saurik - has created a new version of MobileSubstrate called CydiaSubstrate.  It will work on iOS devices AND Mac desktops and laptops running OS X.

Freeman created a new version of MobileSubstrate which he dubbed "CydiaSubstrate." This new version can run on both iOS as well as Mac OS X on the desktop. "Just like you can make all these modifications on the iPhone, you can make these same modifications on the desktop," Freeman said. "Until now, there has never been a way to easily install modifications to the system or third-party applications, as well as keep them updated."

Apple is planning to launch an official Mac App Store, probably in January, to sell apps to Mac laptop and desktop users. Jay Freeman says this is co-incidence, and he was planning a Cydia Mac store anyway.
