Once a year, a group of American linguists get together to vote for The Word Of the Year. And the American Dialect Society's 2010 Word Of The Year is...."App".
Not surprising really when you think only a short time ago we were calling them programmes...or sometimes applications.
It's the latest of fairly high-tec line. The 2009 Word Of The Year was "Tweet" and the Word Of The Decade was "Google".
The Society's Executive Secretary, Allan Metcalf, says they go for a word that sums up the past year:
"My analogy is it's like Time magazine picking a person of the year. It's not a scientific thing, but the word or words that signify what was important about that year, what had people all in a tither."
