The Guardian Launches Subscription iPhone App

The UK newspaper, The Guardian, has launched a subscription-based iPhone app...but if you bought the paper's old app, you're left in the cold.

It costs £2.99 for six months or £3.99 for 12 months. And it takes over from the older Guardian app.  That cost a one-off £2.39, and the newspaper says that app will be "switched off" in six months time. Why can't users of the old app just get the new one as an update with six-months free subscription. Bah!

The new app is multi-media rich. It's a free download and subscription is by in-app purchase. It seems odd The Guardian should do this now, when it seems Apple is poised to introduce a new method of newspaper and magazine subscribing through iTunes accounts. And equally as odd...there's no sign of an iPad version.

The app is also being launched in the US, where it will be subscription-free and supported by adverts.
