iOS4.3 Beta - The Changes At A Glance

Apple has released iOS4.3 beta software update for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. It's available for developers to download and test. Here are the changes at a glance:

  • New Multi-Touch gestures for the iPad. Swipe left or right to switch between apps, swipe to reveal multi-tasking bar and four and five-finger to pinch-and-zoom the homescreen.  This should make multi-tasking on the iPad a whole lot easier, although it's not yet confirmed Apple will activate this feature for 4.3.  Update: Apple haven't activated this feature in the final public iOS4.3 release...but there is a way of activating it yourself. 
  • Hardware switch support is back for iPad screen orientation lock. You can now choose whether the iPad side switch controls screen lock or mute.
  • Personal Hotspot: all iPhones will now be able to become a Personal WiFi Hotspot, so you can connect up to five other devices. But, be warned, your carrier may charge extra for this.
  • Support is withdrawn for the iPhone 3G and the iPod Touch 2G. The beta 4.3 is not available for these devices.
  • The FaceTime icon has been redesigned.
  • There's AirPlay support for third-party apps.
  • There's full-screen iAd support for the iPad.
  • iOS4.3 is also for Apple TV.
  • You will be able to play iPhone SMS alert tones up to 10 times after a message has been received.
