In a clash of the giants, Microsoft is trying to stop Apple from trademarking the term "App Store".
Apple wants it to be all its own....and Microsoft and a lot of other companies think that's ridiculous.
The online stores manufacturers use to sell us apps have different names: Android's Market...Nokia's Ovi Store...but increasingly they want to use "App Store", especially Amazon, Verizon and Vodafone, which are all planning to set up their own "app stores".
Microsoft argues that "app store" is a generic term for online stores that sell applications. Apple believes its gigantic iTunes-based app store is so...well...gigantic, it should have the name to itself.
Let's not forget that many years ago, Microsoft was allowed to trademark the word "Windows".
"Are you cold? Shall I shut those non-Microsoft windows, with a small w of course?".
I think I might try to trademark "blog".
