The app is available initially in the United States and the cost will be 99c a week or $39.99 a year with a two-week free trial.
The subscriptions will be in-app and will be handled by Apple with the choice of paying weekly or yearly. So it looks like Apple will be getting its 30% of the subscriptions.
Apple says it will make an announcement soon about this subscription model moving over to other publications. It's looking like this will coinside with the release of the next iOS 4.3 operating system update for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.
As for design, "The Daily" is certainly media rich, with videos and Facebook and Twitter integration.
More than 100 journalists have been taken on to work on the paper and the lead story of the first edition is the street demonstrations in Egypt. "The Daily" will be released every morning, but will also be updated "as needed"
Here's part of the News Corp Press Release:
Although "The Daily" is touted as iPad-only, News Corp says it will roll onto other devices in the future.
Update: We've asked News Corp when "The Daily" will be released in other countries. "We have no immediate timescale".
Seems like they want to concentrate the US first before dipping their toes into other waters.
