Amazon Poised To Open Android App Store

Amazon is about to try to get into the potentially very lucrative business of selling apps for smartphones.

Initially, the Amazon appstore, as it will be called, will try flogging apps for Android devices and will attempt to take business away from Google's Android Market store which comes pre-installed on all Android-powered devices.

It's thought the Amazon launch is imminent and word has it the store will undercut Google's Market in price. As yet, it's not known exactly how the Amazon store will work: you may be able to buy and download apps straight from the Amazon website, or you may be able to download a store app onto your device - or both.

It's already known it has one exclusive up its sleeve - the Amazon appstore will have first rights on the latest incarnation of the incredibly popular Angry Birds game, Angry Birds Rio.

And don't underestimate the power of Amazon. Many people put its Kindle bookreader in a coffin when the iPad was launched with its iBooks store. But Amazon plugged away and the Kindle is now going from strength to strength.
