How To Activate Secret Multi-Gestures On Your iPad

(Update: You can now enable multi-gestures using Windows. Details are here

One of the best features of the new iOS4.3 iPad operating system - it comes pre-installed on the iPad 2 - is multi-gestures.

Apple included a load of new screen-swipes in the beta versions of the software but they're hidden in the public release.  They let you do things like swipe your iPad screen left or right to switch between open apps.

But fret not, you can activate these multi-gestures for $5 if you've got a Mac.

Hit the jump to find out what to do:

1. You need to get a copy of Apple's Xcode software. It's downloadable from the Mac App Store and will cost you $5.  It meant for app developers, but it works fine for everyone. And a word of warning...it's a BIG download, something like 4GB.

2. Install and open Xcode on your mac and plug in your iPad. It will appear in Xcode's "devices" list.

3. Click on "Use For Development" button.

4. It will now ask you to enter your iOS developer credentials. Don't panic...I know you don't have them. Just click "Cancel" and ignore the error message that will follow.

5. Xcode will in fact have activated developer mode and the little iPad icon on Xcode shouldhave turned green.  Now on your iPad, you have to stop your Settings app: Open the iPad's multi-tasking bar, and kill (tape the cross) on the Settings icon. Or you can simply reboot your iPad.  Now go to Settings > General and just under Lock Rotation and Mute settings, you'll see Multitasking Gestures.  Switch it on...and enjoy.

If you're now wondering where the Xcode app you downloaded onto your Mac is...go to your Mac Hard Drive > Developer and you should find it there.
