UK mobile network O2 this week introduced a new way of blocking what it considers adult 18+ websites. But it's getting it terribly wrong.
Here's just one example from the Guardian:
The trouble is O2 has changed its content filtering from an opt-in system to an opt-out system. You're barred from looking at so called 18+ content until you make a £1 payment to O2 using a credit card as age verification. It's quite a good deal, really, because O2 will credit your account with £2.50 in return.
It's laudable system...as long as this third-party company hired in to do it actually gets it right. And it isn't at the moment.
Update: Users are reporting that even Google Translate is being blocked by this crazy new O2 filtering system. That's the Google Translate website AND the iPhone app.
