"Steamy Windows" Rogue Android App Racks Up Premium SMS Bills

A warning has been issued about a rogue Android smartphone app that runs up huge texting bills without the user's knowledge.

The internet security firm, Symantec says a free Android Market app called "Steamy Windows" has been hijacked by Chinese hackers and modified.

The modified version is now available for download from third-party app stores.

The original app creates the illusion of steam on a device screen which can be wiped off. But the modified version automatically sends out text messages to premium-rate services and the hackers get a cut of the charges.

The modified app also blocks messages from users' networks warning them they're overspending on their SMS account.
