Blackberry PlayBook "Sells 50,000 On Launch"

It's estimated about 50,000 Blackberry Playbooks were sold on its US launch yesterday.

The figure comes from analysts who checked 70 retail stores as well as on-line outlets. They say there were sell-outs at 11% of stores.

They've concluded that the PlayBook launch is a "modest" success for Research In Motion and may have been more successful than the recent launch of the Motorola Xoom tablet.

But no-one expects the PlayBook to seriously challenge Apple's iPad 2, which is still in short supply after selling out in 26 launch countries.
