Time Warner Cable Cuts iPad App Channels After Legal Threats


Time Warner Cable has cut a third of its channel offering on its newly-launched iPad app.

It follows legal threats from the programme makers that the US cable company doesn't have the right to stream the channels onto the app.

Fox, Viacom and Discovery have all complained.  Time Warner says in a statement:
[F]or the time being, we have decided to focus our iPad efforts on those enlightened programmers who understand the benefit and importance of allowing our subscribers – and their viewers – to watch their programming on any screen in their homes.

I really hope this doesn’t cause an increase in monthly price for TWC customers. I just don’t understand why this app would cause any commotion, especially when it doesn’t stream live TV outside of your own WIFI network. I use the Remote Access app from my employer, DISH Network, to stream DVR recordings and live TV remotely to my iPhone. Time Warner definitely has some catching up to do in the app market.

They've now added some "filler" channels. Time Warner is the first cable channel to stream to the iPad so programme makers are looking on it as a test case. Basically they want more money.
