The Amazon tablet rumour-mill is hotting up. The Taiwan trade paper, DigiTimes, is reporting sources saying the on-line retailer has commissioned manufacturer Quanta Computer to build a tablet device:
Taiwan-based notebook maker Quanta Computer has recently received OEM orders from Amazon for its reported tablet PC and the device will also receive full support from Taiwan-based electrophoretic display (EPD) maker E Ink Holdings (EIH) for supplying touch panel as well as providing its Fringe Field Switching (FFS) technology, according to sources from upstream component makers.It seems the Amazon tablet will not replace its Kindle bookreader, but will directly take on the iPad.
There are increasing reports that Amazon's plan is to cut the Kindle price and clean up in the bookreader market, getting its profits from the sale of eBooks.
But it realises there is a separate market in tablet devices for surfing, emailing and game-playing, dominated at the moment by the iPad and with no real challengers as yet.
