Apple is fast signing up publishers to its new iPad subscription system.
The latest is Conde Nast, which will start offering its New Yorker magazine on iPad subscription next week. And it will be followed soon by seven other titles including Wired, Vanity Fair and GQ.
The deal will see the prices of the iPad magazines slashed to $1.99 each issue. At the moment, they cost up to $4.99. And annual subscriptions will sell for $19.99.
The theory is the ease of customers using their iTunes accounts to pay - and the reduced cover cost - will see a dramatic rise in downloads. That's how Apple's selling it, anyway.
The Conde Nast deal follows others with Hearst and Time Inc. Apple is winning the battle to control iPad subscriptions - and get 30% of the cover price for its trouble.
