Telegraph Praises Apple After iPad App Launch

UK newspaper, The Daily Telegraph, is full of praise for Apple after launching its subscription iPad app.

This goes against the trend of publishers complaining about Apple's "too strict" rules. And it appears Apple is prepared to be flexible.

Telegraph Digital Editor Edward Roussel says Apple has been "co-operative and helpful".  One thing publishers really really want is subscribers' data, which with Apple insisting on iTunes payments for in-app subscriptions, won't be available to them.

But Roussel says Apple has allowed it to include a survey in the buying process - as long as there are no mandatory questions.

“The bottom line is we don’t have a gripe with Apple on the subscription model that they have,” Mr Roussel says. “We found they were prepared to enter into a dialogue with us.”
The Telegraph is charging £9.99 a month and Roussel is happy to hand over a third to Apple because it provides a "user-friendly" way to pay.

The Telegraph is modelling the iPad edition very much on the print version with publication at 5am each day and no unshceduled updates unless there's a major breaking story.
