Apple has quietly done a U-turn on its policy covering in-app subscriptions.
In February, it introduced new rules for magazines and newspapers insisting that the price of in-app subscriptions be the "same price or less than...offered outside the app".
It's now changed its terms and conditions and the rule has been removed. This now leaves publishers free to charge more for in-app subscriptions than, say, they charge on their website. Remember, Apple takes a 30% cut on all in-app sales.
So, publishers could attract more traffic to their web pages by offering cheaper iPhone or iPad subscriptions through their websites.
Earlier this week, The Financial Times announced it was abandoning its iPad app in favour of a web app. Basically, this is a special website that's optimised for the iPad, but it frees the paper from Apple app rules.
