UK national newspaper, The Guardian, says its iPhone app - launched in January - has been downloaded more than 400,000 times.
The app offers very limited free access to content, and charges £2.99 subscription for six months full access or £3.99 for a year.
The paper says only 67,258 users have opted for the subscription deal.
But its free mobile website has seen a surge in growth, now accounting for 10% of traffic to The Guardian's web presence, compared with 4.5% this time last year. The mobile site attracted nearly 4.3-million unique visits in April.
Interestingly, in the US, where The Guardian app is free and funded by advertising, there have been 36,098 downloads.
