HP has announced that it's first foray into the tablet market - the TouchPad - will go on sale in the US on July 1. Pre-orders will start on June 19. Release in the UK, Ireland, France and Germany will be "a few days later", followed by an international roll-out.
Earlier this year, HP CEO Leo Apotheker - talking about the TouchPad - said: "We will not release a product that is not perfect".
So, presumably he's now convinced the WiFi 9.7" tablet is perfect enough to take on the iPad, something other manufacturers have so far failed to do successfully.
The one possible iPad-killer feature is the TouchPad's operating system It's webOS, which was highly praised when it was used on those Palm smartphones that could have been a real rival to the iPhone if they hadn't been so late on the market and if the build quality had been better.
And the price of the new tablet? 99c more than the iPad: $499.99 for 16GB and $599.99 for 32GB. You do wonder why they bothered with the extra 99c.
