The UK's largest mobile networks have teamed up to launch a mobile wallet system.
Customers of Vodafone, O2, Orange and T-Mobile will be able to wave their mobiles over a terminal to pay for good and services - as long as they have a phone that packs the technology.
An increasing number of handsets come equipped with Near Field Technology: it's thought Apple may include it in the next-generation iPhone.
And there are several companies, including Google, trailing NFT terminals. Whoever wins customers first is set to make big money.
The theory is people always carry their mobile phone with them and will gladly give up debit and credit cards for the convenience of swiping their phones to pay.
The UK networks hope their attempt to grab the market will go live early next year.
According to The Guardian, the UK's smallest network, 3, is angry at being left out:
Kevin Russell, chief executive of 3, the UK's smallest operator, hit out at his larger rivals for leaving 3 out of the project. "We would want and expect to be a part at the heart of a cross-industry development like this and are more than a little concerned that, as a core competitor, we have not yet been invited to be part of this joint venture," he said. You can follow IJSMblog on Twitter and Facebook
