It's Apple's answer to RIM's Blackberry Messenger, which comes with all Blackberry devices and lets users message each other - again, for free. Along with secure email, it's been a major feature of Blackberry smartphones for years.
Apple is hoping to take over the mantle with iMessage, emphasising that the system will be "secure". It's hoping to lure business users away from Blackberry and onto the iPhone and iPad.
