Facebook has launched free video chat to its services - powered by Skype.
It's also rolling out "improved" buddy lists, which show users which of their friends are on-line.
To video call an on-line friend, you just click a button to ask to connect and you don't have to have the Skype app installed. If there's no answer or your friend doesn't accept the call, you can leave a video message.
It works entirely through the Facebook website. The video service is PC web-based, so won't work on Facebook mobile apps, but the company says this could be introduced in the future.
Facebook video-calling is also restricted to one-to-one connections. Google+, the search giant's social network to rival Facebook which has just gone into beta testing, offers "Hangouts", which is basically group video conferencing.
Making the announcement, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the social network now has 750-million users.
There was some speculation Facebook would also announce the long-awaited app specifically designed for the iPad, but there was no mention.
