If you're not using one of Apple's in-built wallpapers on OS X Lion, the chances are it keeps disappearing on each reboot.
Say you're using a picture from iPhoto, it probably won't be there after you've switched your computer off and on again.
It seems it's a glitch in the new Mac operating system and Lion won't search through levels of sub-folders for your chosen wallpaper.
And easy workaround (above) is from Apple Support forums. Create a folder in documents and copy your wallpaper picture there. Then select it as wallpaper. It seems that works.
