This gives you some idea of the cash clout the iPhone carries. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the third largest US mobile network, Sprint, is paying Apple $20bn over four years to get exclusive rights to the new iPhone 5.
Sprint is banking on selling 30.5-million devices in what's being seen as a huge gamble by the network. It could ramp it up to No.1, overtaking AT&T and Verizon....or it could bankrupt the company if the gamble fails.
Apple is holding a media event at its Cupertino, California, headquarters on Tuesday, October 4. It's known it's "an iPhone event" but apart from that it's speculation. There could be the launch of the iPhone 5. There could be the launch of an iPhone 4S. There could be the launch of both.
More certain is a date for the release of iOS5 and Apple's cloud-storage and syncing system iCloud.
