Nokia Chief Executive Stephen Elop has taken a swipe at the Apple App Store saying: "There are only so many flashlight apps that you need for a smartphone".
He was answering criticism that the Windows Phone 7 app store has nowhere near as many downloads as Apple or Google's Android.
He told Bloomberg:
“There’s a small number of applications, in the hundreds, that are must haves, and we’ll do whatever is necessary to make sure those are on our platform,” he said. “The popular apps, the high end of the curve, we’ll be very focused on. It’s not a race of total quantity. There’s only so many flashlight apps that you need for a smartphone.”Nokia is hoping to reverse its plummeting share of the smartphone market by loading its devices with Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 operating system, with the first joint-venture device, the Nokia Lumia 800 going on sale later this month.
