Microsoft has unveiled plans for a Windows App Store, following the lead of Apple with its Mac App Store.
The days of shopping in your High Street for PC programmes are numbered with users now downloading applications from on-line stores, usually tied in with the operating system being used.
The Microsoft offering will be linked to the launch of Windows 8, which is now expected to have a beta test-drive outing in February.
It says some apps will be free, and paid-for downloads will start at $1.49/95p. Unlike the Apple regime, developers will be allowed to offer a trial.
Microsoft will take 30% of app sale prices, but this will drop to 20% for apps that rake in more than $25,000. Apple's rate is a blanket 30%.
Interestingly, Microsoft will also allow developers to use any platform for in-app sales, unlike Apple which insists all in-app sales go through its own payment system with Cupertino taking 30%.
