UK mobile operator O2 has launched a new way for you to get an iPhone 4S - O2 Lease.
There's no up-front cost and for £55 a month you get a 16GB iPhone 4S, 750 minutes talk-time, unlimited texts and 500MB of mobile data as well as handset insurance. A 32GB device will cost an extra £10 a month.
At the end of 12 months, you hand your phone back to O2 and you can get a new one and start another lease contract.
Sally Cowdry, marketing and consumer director for O2 UK, said: “This is the first time a UK mobile operator has adopted a leasing model. We know that customers and small businesses are used to leasing everyday items from cars and washing machines to photocopiers and office space. They understand how it works and what the advantages of a leasing are. We have simply taken this idea and applied it to the smartphone market.”We're not quite sure what the advantages are of leasing: a conventional iPhone 4S on an 18-month O2 contract will give you 900 minutes, unlimited texts and 500MB data for £47 a month. The phone will cost you £47 up-front, but you can sell it on after the contract is over. You do get insurance with the leasing model, but phones are normally covered by home contents insurance anyway, and you do get to swap your phone yearly.
