UK Networks: We Don't Use Carrier IQ Spyware

The UK mobile networks are insisting they don't install or use Carrier IQ spyware on smartphones.

Concerns have been raised in the US after the revelation that some manufacturers, including Apple, Samsung and HTC have been installing the app on devices, so networks can collect usage information. They all say no "personal data" is used, but the app, which can operate in the background without the knowledge of the owner, is capable to sending back virtually all data on the phone, including text messages, call history and emails.
Apple has confirmed the app is still present on its iPhone 4.  It says all its other devices running iOS5 have had the programme stripped out. But it says the iPhone 4 app can be disabled by going to Settings>General>About>Diagnostics&Usage and select "Don't Send".

And Apple has pledged to get rid of the app completely in its next software update.

Carrier IQ is an app produced by a US company that has been widely used on smartphones for several years. It's described as "diagnostic" software that can be preinstalled and send "marketing and planning" data to carriers.
