We've raved a tiny bit here about Nokia's Lumia range of smartphones running Windows Phone 7 operating system from Microsoft. They're classy devices and the OS has a lot of promise.
If the Nokia-Microsoft tie-up works, it means survival for the Finnish company that used to be No. 1 in the mobile phone business. If not....well, Nokia could be no more.
The three Lumia devices released so far have sold fairly well, but haven't set the world on fire despite good reviews and a huge marketing budget.
Microsoft will soon be releasing a major update to the OS, WP 8, and The Verge is reporting sources claiming that Nokia will be unveiling two new devices running the OS at a joint news conference with Microsoft on September 5.
It seems there'll be two new Lumias: One, codenamed Phi (leaked photo above), will aim for the premium end of the market and the other, codenamed Arrow, will be mid-range.
Unfortunately, owners of current Lumia devices won't be able to upgrade because WP 8 runs on dual-core processors, but there will be a half-way house update giving some of the cosmetic changes in the OS.
It seems Nokia wants to make the announcement before Apple's expected unveiling of the new iPhone on September 21.
Although quote how Nokia will cope with trying to keep up with the frenzy that will accompany the new iPhone launch is a mystery.
