One very welcome new feature in Windows Phone 8 is the ability to increase the size of some fonts in various applications.
Go to Settings > Ease of Access and you'll see a slider which controls font sizes in People, email, messaging and also on the lock screen.
It's excellent if your sight isn't 20:20.
And if you want to make things even clearer, try toggling "High Contract" to on.
We would urge Microsoft to expand the font-control feature to other apps, like Calendar where diary entries can be hard to read.
