One of the major new features of Windows Phone 8.1 is transparent tiles and apps have started appearing to make the most of it.
One is Clock Hub that puts a big tile on your Start Screen showing the time. WP8.1 now lets Tiles update every minute and that's exactly what Clock Hub does.
It's also transparent so your background image shines through.
HTC Windows Phones have had a similar tile since they were launched, and this is a very welcome addition to other brands. Obviously, it's for WP8.1 only and unfortunately you can only have a large tile...it would be great to be able to change the size. And we haven't been using the app long enough to know what effect it has on the battery.

A few apps have appeared in the Windows Phone Store offering ways of making the most of the Start Screen in WP8.1. Another good one is Start Screen Customizer.
It lets you create a solid colour background or choose an image and then play around with graduated colours to your hearts content. It's a big fiddly to use, but the effects of rainbow colours passing under your tiles as you move them is stunning.
