Kindle Fights Back As Amazon Feels The Apple Heat

Amazon has cut the price of its Kindle bookreader in the face of record-breaking sales of Apple's iPad.

The Kindle forged new ground in digital publishing when it was launched, but Amazon has refused to release sales figures. All the company will say is "it's sold millions".

Then, earlier this year, along came the iPad, which can be used as a bookreader with its own book store. Apple says it sold a million of the devices in the US alone within a month of its launch.

Now Amazon has cut the price of the Kindle in the States from $259 to $189.  It follows a similar move by Barnes and Noble to slash the cost of its rival reader, the Nook.

While the iPad is not a dedicated bookreader and costs about three-times the price, the Apple device is being seen as winning the battle in digital books.

Even if the Kindle and the Nook fall by the wayside, both Amazon and Barnes and Noble are still in with a fighting chance. They both have apps you can use on the iPad to download and read their books.

It's just the ground-breaking hardware that may be the casualty.
