Well, well, Microsoft have eventually got round to it. They've released the official Windows Live Messenger for the iPhone app and it supports push notifications.Surprisingly, on the day iOS4 is released, it doesn't support multitasking,one of the very things iOS4 is meant to sort out. So you can't keep it open in the background.
And it's not totally iPad ready...so it will show up either small or bad quality.
Does anyone use Windows Messanger any more? Probably not!
