Vanishing Signal and Yellow Spots Mar iPhone 4 Launch

Users of the iPhone 4 - launched today - are reporting two major problems: yellow discolouration of the screen and a disappearing signal.

Apple was very proud of the metal bezel that covers the sides of the device because, not only does it look smart, it also acts as an antenna for your network signal.

But, it seems if you hold the phone in a certain way, the bezel shorts and your signal received signal slowly gets weaker until it disappears altogether.

Users say it happens when it's held in your left hand, touching both sides and the bottom.

Here's a video of the problem.

Of course, if you buy one of Apple's £25 "bumper" cases, the problem goes because the bezel is insulated.

Perhaps Apple should be giving these "bumpers" away with the phone until the problem is sorted.

Some customers are also reporting yellow bands or spots on their screens. One theory is it's caused by a special glue used to stick the high-resolution Retina Display screen onto the front glass.  Experts say the discolouration is normal and will disappear as the bonding sets properly.  It seems Apple may have been in such a rush to get the iPhone 4 out, it hasn't allowed proper time for this to happen.

So far, Apple has not commented.
