Amazon Says Digital Books Now Outselling Paper Books

Amazon says the publishing industry has reached a turning point.

It's now selling more Kindle digital books than print books. And it says the gap is accelerating.

Here are the figures, according to Amazon:

Over the past three months, for every 100 hardcover books Amazon.com has sold, it has sold 143 Kindle books. Over the past month, for every 100 hardcover books Amazon.com has sold, it has sold 180 Kindle books. This is across Amazon.com's entire U.S. book business and includes sales of hardcover books where there is no Kindle edition. Free Kindle books are excluded and if included would make the number even higher.

Amazon doesn't break down the figures into device-specific sales, but it's known the Kindle bookstore has received a big boost from its iPad app and price-cuts for the Kindle book-reader.
