BBC iPhone/iPad UK News App Tops 560,000 Downloads

It's reported the BBC News app for iPhone and iPad, which was launched Friday last week, was downloaded more than 560,000 times in its first week.

The launch of the free app in the UK had been delayed while it was investigated by the BBC Trust, which eventually gave it the go-ahead. The world news version has been available in other countries for several months.

The UK's Newspaper Publishers' Association had complained that it was unfair competition in the commercial market.

Broadcast reports that some users have criticised the live BBC News channel feed on the app for not working properly and there's been criticism that the app loads slowly.

At the time of writing, the BBC News app is still No.1 in the iTunes free apps chart with 3.5 stars.

The BBC is planning to roll out the app to Android and Blackberry devices and says a sport and iPlayer app will be released for the iPhone and iPad soon.
