HMV Gets Into Digital Downloads

UK music retailer HMV has launched an on-line digital store.

It's called, rather unimaginatively, hmvdigital and it's hoping to rival the hugely profitable success of Apple's iTunes.

Last year, HMV bought a 50pc stake in music download service 7digital and the new on-line store is the outcome.

HMV had to do something. Sales of CDs are steadily dropping and digital downloads are rising - nearly 50pc up in 2009.

hmvdigital boasts a library of ten-million songs and will sync with iTunes and Windows Media Player and it's PC and Mac compatible. For real music lovers, some tracks are downloadable at the highest MP3 quality compression of 320kbps.

And there are some bargains to be had with the launch. Some chart albums are discounted to £4.99.
