AppleInsider reports that the scam happened when phone owners downloaded a wallpaper programme from Google's Android Market.
It reports that the app collected users text messages, browser history, the phone's SIM card number and voicemail password. The info was then sent to a website owned by someone in Shenzhen, China.
It's claimed the theft was discovered by Lookout, a private security firm specialising in the Android platform.
Experts are saying it validates the tight lockdown Apple exerts on its iTunes App Store.
