Smartphone Sales Rise "Thanks To Android Not Apple"

UK mobile phone retailer Carphone Warehouse says rising sales of Android smartphones have helped it increase profits.

Announcing the company's last quarter results, Chief Executive Roger Taylor said Android devices had made big strides in 2010.

"This time a year ago we would have been saying that the smartphone demand was mainly for the iPhone and the Blackberry, but we've seen a real advent of Android in the last three to six months," he said.

But he said he didn't believe the iPhone 4 "antennagate" issue was to blame: "We're seeing an incredibly low return rate for the iPhone 4".

Carphone Warehouse announced a 3.7pc rise in sales to £794 for the last quarter. While sales of more basic mobile phones are going down, sales of more expensive smartphones are steadily rising.
