Jailbreaking your iDevice has never been really wrong immoral illegal. And that's now official. In the States, anyway.
The Library of Congress, which basically researches and lays down the law, has now formally included jailbreaking in its OK things to do. It's decided jailbreaking a mobile device is "fair".
Don't get too excited. It doesn't mean Apple has to jailbreak or unlock its devices for you. It just means that you can now do it yourself as long as you don't use any Apple stuff, like code.
None of the iPhone Dev-Team jailbreaks use Apple code. The breakers are very careful about that. But it also doesn't mean Apple will stop trying to prevent jailbreaks. The cat and mouse game will continue - a jailbreak comes out and Apple blocks it with a software update.
I must admit, I never thought it was illegal in the first place.
