Apple Gives Dates for iPhone and iPad Software Updates

Apple will be releasing a new software update for the iPhone next week.  iOS4.1 will be available for download from iTunes and will be free.

Steve Jobs promises it will fix many issues currently crippling the iPhone 4.  He specifically mentioned the device's proximity sensor problem: the screen sometimes fails to deactivate when you put the phone to your ear to speak causing random pressing of keys.

If your iPhone is jailbroken, this update with break the jailbreak. The advice is to wait for a new jailbreak to be released if you rely on it.

And the long awaited software update for the iPad - iOS4.2 - is still at least a couple of months away. It's slated for a November release and will bring multi-tasking and folders to the device.
