Apple Takes Another Bashing From Consumer Watchdog Over Antennagate

There seems little doubt that Apple is guilty of producing a product with a design flaw.

Hold the iPhone 4 as nature intended and you short the external antenna and lose signal.

Steve Jobs has made it clear he believes all phones have the same problem and antennagate has been whipped up by the media.

Nevertheless, Apple gave away free iPhone 4 cases to sort out the issue. You can't get a much stronger admission of guilt than that.

Now, the company has confirmed that the free-cases-for-all will end on October 1. Although, you can still complain and get a free case after that. Confused?

Consumer Reports is an influential consumer watchdog website in the US and it was when CR decided it could no longer recommend the iPhone 4 because of the antenna issue, that Apple launched the free-case giveaway.

So what does CR say now?  Well, it hasn't changed its mind:

"...putting the onus on any owners of a product to obtain a remedy to a design flaw is not acceptable to us. We therefore continue not to recommend the iPhone 4, and to call on Apple to provide a permanent fix for the phone's reception issues."
